What is a Mentor?
MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership defines mentoring as a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.
What is C.A.M.P.?
C.A.M.P. stands for Court Appointed Mentoring Program. Court Appointed Mentors are trained community volunteers appointed by a judge to serve as additional support and encouragement as the family progresses through the Families In Need of Services (FINS) early intervention program.
How can Mentoring support juveniles?
Mentoring can offer the community’s troubled youth the following components:
- Support for Education
- Community and Social Skills
- Responsibility, Leadership, and Character Development
- Set Career Goals and Develop Job Skills
- Health, Self-Esteem, and Well-Being
Did you know?
A statistical report from America’s Promise Newsletter No. 452 states that children who interacted regularly with mentors for a year were:
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
- 27% less likely to start drinking
- 87% attended or planned to attend college within a year of graduation
- 73% said mentors helped them set higher goals for themselves
- 59% improved their grades in school
What are the requirements to become a Mentor?
- Must be over the age of 18
- Must consent to a background check and drug screen
- Must commit to at least 1 hour of volunteer time per week
- Must complete an application and training course
- Must authorize a statement of commitment and pledge of confidentiality
- Must accept supervision from C.A.M.P. manager and staff, and court
